Winter Tyre Checks: Get Your Farm Machinery Ready Before the New Season

When the weather gives you a window to get onto the land, the last thing you need is a machine sitting waiting on tyres.

Winter is a good opportunity to check the tyres on your tractors, trailers, telehandlers and other agricultural machinery. Finding problems now gives you time to sort them out before the pressure of spring work begins.

At Farm Tyres NI, we encourage farmers and contractors to plan their tyre purchases early. A little preparation over winter can help prevent costly downtime, avoid the seasonal rush and secure tyres at an agreed price before any future increases.

Give every machine a proper tyre check

It is easy to remember the tractor you use every day and overlook the trailer or implement parked at the back of the shed. Take time to check all the machinery you will need next season.

Clean away mud so you can see the tread and sidewalls clearly, and look for:

  • Worn or damaged tread: Check for uneven wear, damaged lugs and tyres that struggled for grip during the previous season.

  • Cracks, cuts or bulges: Pay attention to the sidewalls and areas around the tread. Have suspicious damage assessed before putting the machine back to work.

  • Pressure loss: A tyre that regularly needs air deserves investigation.

  • Valve and rim problems: Look for damaged valves, missing valve caps and visible rim damage or corrosion.

A tyre may still hold air while showing signs that need attention. Getting it checked during a quieter spell gives you more time to decide whether repair or replacement is the right option.

Check pressures throughout winter

Tyres still need attention when machinery is parked up. Check pressures regularly, taking readings when the tyres are cold, and use the tyre manufacturer’s guidance for the machine’s load, speed and work.

For machinery going into storage, follow the manufacturer’s storage recommendations and reset pressures for the intended work before returning it to service.

Order now to avoid the spring rush

Leaving tyre replacement until the first dry week can turn a planned purchase into an urgent problem.

Ordering ahead gives you time to check sizes, compare suitable options and arrange delivery and fitting around your workload. It also allows extra time if a particular size or brand needs to be sourced.

The tyre you need may not be available for immediate delivery when everyone else needs it too. Buying during winter helps reduce the risk of long waiting times when the season gets busy.

Secure your price before possible increases

Tyre prices can change, so waiting until the new season may mean paying more for a replacement you already know you need.

Purchasing now at an agreed price removes that uncertainty for the tyres you buy. It also gives you a clear cost to work into your machinery budget.

If a tyre is already worn out or damaged, putting off the purchase can leave you facing both a higher bill and an inconvenient delay.
